Great start and gives it all back..if this thunder stops hopefully he can recover. He was do happy and pumped after his start and then collapse. Getson is making a point of getting behind phil on almost every tee shot. Which is tough with so many people. I really like the guy.

Tough to do. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day but starting on 17 will be hard.

I think 17 is his only chance...not too many have even come close to birdie-ing 18, unless you get it in the fairway and have a great approach shot.

Have to see how many have to get bumped to -1 in order to change the cut line to -1.
On another note, haven't seen as many people make 20+ foot putts like Jason Day does....he has something going for him, playing on another level. Little wirey guy can hit it a long way. I wonder if it's partly because his instructor is also his caddy....imagine if Getson was Phil's caddy, able to make suggestions during a tournament round.

Phil hit it inside of 10 feet at 17 but unfortunately missed the putt...likely will have to somehow birdie the difficult 18th to make the cut...too bad he made a mess of 15 and 16 as he would have at least been inside the cut line. He just can't seem to sustain consistency and string a solid round through 18 holes. He really struggled here off the tee even with way less than driver and of course his putting has again been an issue.

On the green on 18th, 53 feet for birdie...all rides on this putt.
"He made a mess of it" is starting to be the routine call, and when playing well, you are sitting there, thinking, when will the 'mess up' come?

Putts it to 1 ft, not bad if it was a regular putt, but 1 short none the less....homeward bound. Aren't enough players on the course in reach to bogie their way to bring the cut to -1.

Brandon grace just rolled in a 20+ footer at 17. Seen so many long putts go in this week, amazing.

Phil looked a little sheepish saying he was close in his post-round interview, but he did say that he had struck the ball poorly the last two days. I thought he gave it a decent run today. Too bad that he didn't have another hole or two and he might have made it.

I know you just stated what Phil said, so this isn't about your comment. But I am sorry, you are not close if you have missed cuts at 3 of the last 4 tourneys. I hate when he says this crap. Who is he trying to convince? Maybe he should try honesty sometimes and just say my game sucks right now and I have a lot of work to get my golf game where it is acceptable. Makes me think he is trying to convince himself of something that he is not and because of that his preparation for tourneys is lacking.
Oh well, he is not that far off (5 yrs) from the senior tour. Might be the only chance we see him win another golf tourney again since it appears that he can no longer be a consistent golfer anymore. Though I don't think Phil will be playing the Senior Tour when I think about it, so we most likely won't see him win again. I think he will try to play some big tourneys on the regular tour, but mainly just become a businessman.
Phil is my favorite golfer, so it is too bad that my days of cheering for him are waning considerably...

Re: TPC 2nd round 2016
I know Phil says he is close and it's getting a little old hearing him say it so often BUT if you look at his stats in a lot of key areas he's doing great. He hasn't had stats this good in a long time. And yes he has produced a win with less stellar stats in the past. He obviously is reverting back to his old swing ..even the slightest degree off can produce a wild tee shot. I followed him for 2 days and was shocked at some of the wild misses. He really hadn't had many lately. I dont think it's from lack of practice because he has had some great results this year. Been in contention a lot more this year than last 2 years. So that is something to be positive about. The season is far from over and if he can get rid of the one big mistake a tournament he will win again.

I haven't written him off, and you also said that his swing coach said that he was close. The golf channel analysts think he'll win. He plays so well, and then has a shot that is really bad that seems to come from no where--like from the middle of the fairway. Not sure what he's planned the next couple of weeks, but I wish the best for him. Kind of glad that he didn't make the week-end the way conditions were today. He said that his ball striking was not good there. Not sure what's up but hope he can continue to want to play well after the Olympic team is chosen. I personally think that going to the Olympics is a risky move health-wise this year.

Re: TPC 2nd round 2016
Phil is unlikely to make the Olympic Team, fogettaboutit. One announcer on Sirius yesterday (some of them are ex-PGA Tour Players) was talking about what made Jason Day all of a sudden do well at Sawgrass and he said he looked back at holes he did bad and saw he hit driver where driver wasn't needed so he put in his driving iron and minimized driver. He said "take Phil for instance, he uses driver everywhere....when he's hitting it well it serves him well, but when there's a stroke fail, it's his Achilles tendon". I like his move to a more vertical place...I've done that by trial and error, my drives get more left-to-right curvy when my plane is less vertical...maybe that has something to do with shaft length too, but that is hard to assess for me because you have to have same shaft in different lengths and then at different lengths you've changed the swing weight/weight balance which must be re-set.

Re: TPC 2nd round 2016
Not happening on Olympics--part of the nature of the sport is that all of the top players will not get to Rio--might be a blessing considering the schedule-the travel-the water and what not.
PHIL would need two wins in six weeks and that's a big push for anyone.
