This was as close to an interview I could find of Phils explanation.

Re: Valero Texas Open round one and two 2016
I was half paying attention watching the CBS broadcast of the golf and they showed Phil at a dinner Friday night for the military up on stage and pretty sure they said something about honoring his Dad who was a pilot in the service. This kinda makes sense now. Valero Texas Open was a last minute addition to his schedule. IMO he decided, well they were honoring his Dad and he had to go on his behalf so he decided to play. His game was obviously not ready , everyone expected him to play Wells Fargo as the next event after the Masters. So...this is my excuse for his lousy play and Missed Cut. Im sure even though he skipped the pro am and probably hadn't picked up a club to practice he didn't expect to MC and thought this was an opportunity to make some points for Ryder cup. Didn't happen though .
Phil always said he liked to play 3 in a row and I thought it odd sandwiching this event in between 2 off weeks.

That does make sense, but is it possible that's what he did in place of the pro-am?

If they weren't giving his Dad some award I'd say yeah thats possible . I guess I'm trying to justify another MC. lolgophil36 wrote:That does make sense, but is it possible that's what he did in place of the pro-am?

Patrick Reed is going to leapfrog him into the top 8 for Ryder Cup....unless he picks his game up, he'll be looking at Captain's pick at best. I don't know at what point they say, "let's try the younger kids" instead.

I think it's way to early to talk captains pick. There are plenty of tournaments left. It's not like Phil is 100th. We were all excited about his game in the first 2 months 2 bad tournaments doesn't mean he can't find form again.bulls9999 wrote:Patrick Reed is going to leapfrog him into the top 8 for Ryder Cup....unless he picks his game up, he'll be looking at Captain's pick at best. Tough about PHIL this week
I hope his quota of missed cuts is out of his system this week
