Phil was 20 last week if I am not mistaken.

No no no, that might be World Ranking... Phil has been inside the top 8 in Ryder Cup Standings for over a month or two...or three (scroll up and see the past postings of his rankings).

The PGATour site has Phil at #6, but that is only through last week and doesn't include the FedEx, so possibly moving up a spot?

The Official Ryder Cup site is getting sloppy....they used to have the rankings updated Monday morning.

No points to be earned this week with Green Briar canceled so double points at the British Open may really jumble up the top 8. Gotta say with Phil missing the cut at 2 majors plus the Players hanging onto 4th is pretty impressive.

Yes, I agree. Just read that Matsujama (sp?) of Japan pulled out of the Olympics as well. Why doesn't anyone say that "because our sport is played outside, and practice + practice rounds + tournament rounds would require an inordinate amount of time outside compared to other sports, I have decided to withdraw"? They cite Zika virus, but spelling it out would make a more compelling argument.

Who knows, maybe Phil will still get a chance to play....how many need to pull out for Phil to get in?

The European Tour website has a video of Phil and Bones practicing at Royal Stuart. They talk about him a lot and really respect him there. I hope that he does well the next 2 weeks. He also talks about having 3 weeks off and not being exhausted going into the Fed Ex Cup playoffs for a change.

When did they move the John Deere? It used to be the week before the (British) Open Championship, as I remember the John Deere guys offered a charter jet to bring people to the Open directly (I think players plus family?) from the John Deere as an added incentive to get people to play there, and I remember players who won were scrambling to all of a sudden make sure they get their passport worked out if they didn't have it.

I guess this answered my question:

AKRON, Ohio – Matt Kuchar finished with a 12-foot birdie at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which had no bearing on the outcome but still had a few ramifications.

Kuchar tied for third, so that putt was worth an additional $249,250. It cost Jordan Spieth enough world ranking points that Dustin Johnson moved ahead of him to No. 2 by the slimmest of margins.

And that birdie putt could send Kuchar to the Olympics.

Whether he earns a spot in Rio de Janeiro is now out of Kuchar's hands. The Americans are allowed the maximum four players because all of them are among the top 15 in the world ranking, and the birdie allowed him to move to No. 15. Still to be announced is which four Americans will go to Rio.

Of the top four in the world ranking – Johnson (2), Spieth (3), Bubba Watson (5) and Rickie Fowler (7) – Watson is the only one who has said he is going. The biggest question marks of that group are Spieth and Fowler. That's why Kuchar's birdie putt was so important, because if two Americans choose not to go, those spots could end up going to Patrick Reed and Kuchar.

Kuchar wants to play in the Olympics, though it's still a long way off. Not only does he need at least two players to withdraw, he has to be sure he stays among the top 15 in the world ranking after this week.

Olympic qualifying is based on the world ranking published next Monday, and that brings Phil Mickelson into the equation. Mickelson would have to finish alone in second at the Scottish Open – he won the last time it was held at Castle Stuart – to move ahead of Kuchar and be in position for any Olympic withdrawals. If Lefty were to win, he would have a mathematical chance to move ahead of Reed as the first U.S. alternate.

Big weeks for PHIL in Scotland. PHIL is playing on vacationing after Troon so an Olympic call would be special for him.

Phil should be gaining on Ryder Cup field with his finish at the Scottish Open. Patrick Reed has tied him at -7 with more golf to play, but I don't think he will gain so much more than Phil to challenge him in Ryder Cup. Brooks Koepka just pulled out of the Open Championship so there is opportunity for Phil to keep above him as well...but Phil (#4) is virtually tied with Bubba (#5) so how they end up after the Open Championship will determine their placement (along with that being a 'double points' tournament).

NO Ryder cup points for non PGA events but I am hopeful for a big week coming up.
