Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
OK, this was taken from the PGA Tour's Ryder Cup Standings page
PGA Tour Ryder Cup Standings (through Genesis Open)
Seems Phil leap-frogged Patrick Reed to get into 11th place !! Ah ha!, Bubba Watson jumped up from 60th place to 10th place with his win. I think if Phil keeps playing like he has been, he could either get high enough that he's one of the 8-man automatic picks, or if within striking distance 9-12 position, that he would be an automatic Captain's pick. If he wasn't playing well, they could take the sentiment that "he got a Captain's pick last time and lets give the young guys a chance" attitude, except, they want to win as well and Phil has performed well in the last few President's and Ryder Cups.

Notah Began said he played golf with Phil and he is very proud hes never needed a pick for Ryder Cup teams and is determined to make it on his own. PhIL proved the last 2 President cups where he needed a pick that he can rise to the occasion with 3-0-1 records.

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
OK, good... I forgot where he needed Captain's picks. So that bodes well for getting a 1st one... if needed, for the Ryder Cup. But I don't see overlooking Phil if he is say 1-4 spots out of 8th place considering how well he is playing. Would love for him to get a win. Not sure where that could be.... the Houston tournament before Augusta or better, at Augusta?

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
Let's see... looks like they haven't updated the Ryder cup Standings at the official ryder cup site:
Phil just added 1,700 pts to his Ryder Cup total
How U.S. players will earn Ryder Cup points in 2018
The calendar has flipped to 2018 and that's huge for Ryder Cup USA hopefuls.
Beginning with this week's Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua's Plantation Course in Maui, Ryder Cup USA points will be available at every regular PGA Tour event in 2018.
Here's a breakdown of how players can collect points in 2018:
2018 Regular PGA Tour events
- 1 point per $1,000 earned
Note: Beginning January 1, 2018, through the PGA Championship, August 12, 2018; includes the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event and WGC events.
* 2018 Opposite Field PGA TOUR events will NOT receive points.
2018 Major Championships
- 2 points per $1,000 earned for the winner
- 1.5 points per $1,000 earned for all others to make the cut at The Masters; U.S. Open; Open Championship; PGA Championship.
Note: The points system for the American team will conclude on August 12, 2018, following the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, with the top eight ( players on the points list securing spots on the U.S. Team.
WGC purses jump to a crazy $10 million in 2018:
Phil doesn’t need the money, but he’s closing in on another hefty six or seven-figure payout.
The WGCs are made-for-TV moneybaths. We don’t know quite how to categorize them. Some find the four-event series off-putting while others welcome any reason to put most of the best players in the world in one spot. They will never carry the weight or importance of a major championship.
But one area where they do compete with the majors, especially right now, is in purse size. This year, the WGC purses are moving to an even $10 million. That’s an absurd amount of money for a regular season event. It’s crazy. It’s obscene. I remember just a few years ago when the PGA of America and PGA Tour made this joint announcement that they were moving their two prized events, the PGA Championship and The Players, to $10 million
This year’s WGC Mexico Championship winner will take a nice $1.7 million chunk of that $10 million purse. That’s a $500k bump from last year’s mark of $9.5 milli

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
I think PHIL is a lock for the Cup. It was also nostalgic in 2017 when folks were talking about PHIL's last hurrah in team play. PHIL was only two or three shots away from a couple of wins in 2017 but it had been so long since 2013. Now its all possible for PHIL
Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
I hope so. The thing that was bugging me was, if there's only 2 Captain's picks, and Tiger is still way out at 100+ but is showing promise, would they pick him over Phil, if Phil was outside of the 'automatic 8'? Would they use both Captain's picks on both Phil and Tiger? or only 1 ? That is why I want Phil inside the Auto-8.
This win has to give him a ton of confidence now....can't wait for Augusta!! What's his schedule between then and now?
Also, can't believe how far these guys hit their clubs.... in playoff, JT was using a gap wedge for 170 yrds? What?.... I'm lucky if I get 60-70 yrds. And Phil was pin hunting on the par5 with 278 (where he landed on the green on 2) with a hybrid?....geesh, if I crush my 3-hybrid (1 out of 4 attempts)....I might get 200 yrds..... after the roll out, lol.

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
With the deadline for automatic 8 so far away, I don't know how they can say that except possibly to even consider as a Captain's pick, that if he was a strong possibility before, then with this win he would most definitely be one if he should end up outside the auto-8 group? But I'm hoping he will do well enough in other tourneys that he will stay in the automatic grouping.

OK, I had it wrong earlier, don't know what I was thinking....U.S. Ryder Cup = 8 automatics + 4 Captain's picks = 12 players
The four remaining slots on the U.S. Team will be Captain's Selections. Three selections will be announced by Captain Jim Furyk following the Dell Technologies Championship scheduled to be completed on Sept. 3, 2018, and the final selection will be announced after the BMW Championship, which is slated to be completed on Sept. 9, 2018.

Nothing to be sorry about... I think it was the white elephant in the room we all didn't want to talk about .
Then in 2018 his west coast tourneys gave us hope again. I read this is the first time since 2005 he's had 4 top 10s in a row. I really believe now this is going to be a great year.

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
With his win at the WGC Match Play, Bubba Watson leap-frogged Phil Mickelson (now 5th) and Brooks Koepka (now 4th) for 3rd place.
Good news is that Brooks is only 18 pts, or $18,000 worth of winnings, ahead of Phil. So Phil has only to gain >$18k over Brooks to get back to 4th place in US Ryder Cup standings (or $9k at Augusts, aren't majors worth 2x pts?, 1 pt per $1,000 won).

Re: 2018 Ryder Cup watch
After Kuch at #9 there are no obvious Captain picks--Brooks K needs to heal and show some form. If he falters Kuch is likely to get 8th spot. Of course someone will win and get into top 8 but IMO PHIL is a lock for a pick or an auto spot.
