Poor putt leaves about a 10 footer for par and an under par round.

Awful, awful bogey from the middle of the fairway. Completely changes how he'll feel about this round.

Re: Masters 1st Round 2016
rough bogey on 18
too many mistakes today and not enough made putts
I know it is the first round, but six shots behind Jordan feels like a lot

He should have had that for birdie not par. THESE younger guys are going to be tough to beat and they are playing good in tough conditions.

Re: Masters 1st Round 2016
three putt par after week second shot gets PHIL to even
Not a bad start but the pressure is on PHIL now for round two

OK. He's not out of it. He'll need his A game, but I have seen guys do well who make the cut on the #. I am sure he had nerves today, and didn't make some putts that should have dropped. I think he did OK.

Yes he does! Poor Fowler, Reed, Dufner, Scott--lots of people going to have trouble worse than Phil's. I think that he can rally. Hope that he can rally!

Re: Masters 1st Round 2016
the winds will likely be the same tomorrow. In other words, they won't be bad at all. Moderate winds as per the NWS forecast. Higher winds are forecast during the overnight hours, but more rain.
Think Phil is too far back now. Spieth is probably shooting 15 under. Can Phil shoot 3 67s? I think now. Could see him getting to -10 and a top 3 finish, though

Jordan is due to come back down to earth. The 3 bobbsey twins ...Spieth Day and Rory need to get beat by a 40 something !!!

Phil overworked it today. He just needs to go out and play. He's caught up in the nostalgia of the place--family there--helping the kids get to know the course. Time to settle in and at least get primed for the US Open!

Re: Masters 1st Round 2016
I heard that excuse by the commentators on Sirius PGATour Radio for the exact opposite, for the newbies, that they arrive they are all wide-eyed and that it's the veterans like Phil that are used to the place and are more 'business-like' how they go about their golf....as a reason that not many new/first timers ever win at Augusta Natl.

Re: Masters 1st Round 2016
He looked way too intense to me. Who knows what's going on, but his fist pumps, etc. tell me that he was really into it. They say you need experience, but look how well Herman did winging it. All just talk, as far as I am concerned. I am sure that different things work for different people, and each year is likely different. Phil's problem is that time is not on his side, and he likely knows it. I don't think being a starter is his dream position in the Masters.
Poor Ernie and his 9 on #1 was on every morning show today. He actually made a good comeback when you consider how it must have rattled him. That first hole is brutal. I've only been to the Masters once, but that year, he doubled the first when his approach shot went over the green long. Tough way to open a round--makes it especially long, and you have to think you've thrown a tournament away on the first hole. The elevation is unbelievable. I can't figure out how they stop the ball on some of those greens.
