Speith saying all the right words

Post by bulls9999 on Mon Jan 11, 2016 5:25 pm

Interesting, the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii was billed as having the highest ranking fields ever, and first time the ranking #1 & #2 OWGR pts holders were present...or something like that.  And Speith then says in his interview, "if he is ever eligible for this tournament and does not come, please feel free to harass him about it....that as far as he was concerned, he will come every time he would be eligible for it".

I like that....that gave cold shower to those that have bypassed it in the past and to tell you the truth, I don't know why.....there is NO CUT, and all you have to do is beat 17 other guys, not 149; I'd come every time as well if I were eligible!

Kudos for Speith for re-charging this tournament.

I don't think it's always been in Hawaii, but I have heard golfers say that after getting their swings ready for the season (before it was year round), that the winds there mess things up for them. This year the winds were down. If a person has won, they should have the money for the trip, but for young golfers, it's an expensive week for the family. $15 cocktails add up fast. LOL I think it's special for new winners as it's a dream venue. This week's tournament is usually played on a vastly different course. Must have been fairly easy last week with the low scores. Also, Jordon's new to the game to be saying those things, which I am certain he means right now.

OK, OK, correction....Maui (I call any of those islands 'Hawaii', lol). No cut, I'm sure even the last place finish gets their costs back, but I like the odds of going up against 17 people rather than 149.

Any of the Hawaiian islands really are my favorite for just a relaxing vacation. Just about the best of all warm-weather vacations anywhere, and we're still in the USA.

Great. They said out of respect for Butch that he's keeping his new coach low key. Phil won the tournament of champions twice when it was held in CA. I think when it moved to Hawaii is when they ran into trouble with no shows. Tiger didn't like it there either.

Well, I saw another Ryder Cup rankings and Phil is currently 5th. If he falls out of contention because he is not playing (you have to play tournaments to get points to keep your rankings), I don't know if he's going to get the 'nod' as a pick. Perhaps President's Cup yea because.....it's the President's Cup, I don't think they hand out the 'out of respect' invitation one more time.

I really believe Phil is highly motivated to make the team on points. Whether his game can keep pace with all these younger guys. ...well I guess we shall see.

The old dog looked pretty sharp at the Pres. Cup. Bet he's really disappointed about the Olympics at this point.

Isn't it weird that Phil hasn't committed to Farmers Ins. I WONDER if he's mad Because of the raw deal he got concerning the redesign of the North Course . Can't imagine he'd disappoint the hometown crowd.

Is this the year that the PGA Tour's new rule that they have to play a tournament they haven't played recently or something like that?....a way for them to get people to events that they may not go to.

They've had something like 6 tournaments already this season he could have played in... his choice not to. No crying on my side if he doesn't make the Ryder Cup. I wonder, if he was some points shy of making the team, would he have thought differently about playing some of the 'lesser' venues if that would have been enough to catapult him into Ryder Cup Points. Speith played a bunch in Australia, now playing the first 2 in January, no rust on those bones. Others showing a bit of early fanfare as well.

Ryder cup points don't start until 2016 so fall series wouldn't have helped him in that regard. In his defense he is working with a new coach and never plays in Hawaii. He better at least top 10 in the 4 west coast events he is
playing. If he falls out of top 50 in rankings and doesn't make WGC at doral I'm screwed.I bought tickets and plane fare.Only thing I can get refunded is hotel. DON'T LET ME DOWN PHIL! !!

Looks like Phil dropped from 5th to 8th in Ryder Cup standings....He is almost on the outside looking in. The the way Bubba and Snedeker are playing lately, looks like they might advance.

Reed moves into top five in Ryder Cup standings

By Mark Aumann
Published: Monday, January 11, 2016 | 10:14 a.m.

The race for the eight qualifying spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team via points got under way in earnest at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. From now until the Barclays, Ryder Cup points will be awarded at regular PGA Tour events.

Jordan Spieth's eight-stroke victory at Kapalua did nothing but cement his runaway status as the points leader, but there were some changes to the top eight. Patrick Reed continues his strong advance, moving from 11th to fifth after finishing second to Spieth. And Brooks Koepka went from eighth to sixth, courtesy of his tie for third with Brandt Snedeker.

That pushed Kevin Kisner from sixth to seventh, Phil Mickelson from fifth to eighth and moved Bubba Watson out of the top eight. However, he's just 73 points behind Watson at this juncture.

RYDER CUP: Qualifying process | Events timeline | Outlook: Potential U.S. team | Ryder Cup Shop

Here's a look at the top 12 following the 2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions (remember, the top eight qualify on points, while U.S. Captain Davis Love III will round out the team with his four Captain's Picks):

1. Jordan Spieth 6,573.664
2. Dustin Johnson 2,682.616
3. Zach Johnson 2,363.002
4. Rickie Fowler 1,774.882
5. Patrick Reed 1,356.050
6. Brooks Koepka 1,333,491
7. Kevin Kisner 1,267.425
8. Phil Mickelson 1,183.697

9. Bubba Watson 1,110.778
10. Brandt Snedeker 954.074
11. J.B. Holmes 803.466
12. Jim Furyk 729.678

Since the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Chaska, Minn., will be played in an Olympic year (with golf included in the Games for the first time since 1904), there have been some adjustments made to the qualifying calendar for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

You can read about the entire qualifying process here, but these are the key qualifying dates:

- Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016: The top eight will be finalized at the conclusion of The Barclays, which is scheduled to finish on this date, as opposed to the traditional closing of points at the conclusion of the PGA Championship, which will be played in July instead of August in 2016 due to the Olympics. It also affords players an additional two weeks from past years to earn a spot on points.

- Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016: Love will select three of his four Captain's Picks at the conclusion of the BMW Championship, scheduled to end on this day.

- Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016: Love will make his fourth and final Captain's Pick at the conclusion of the Tour Championship, scheduled to end on this day.
