PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Phil Mickelson fell apart down the stretch of his opening round at The Players Championship, but his poor play did little to dampen his enthusiasm for his latest endorsement partner.

Mickelson had plenty of attention given his marquee pairing with Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler at TPC Sawgrass, and he turned at least a few heads with his decision to wear a type of full-length, button-down shirt that he first debuted last month during a practice round at the Masters.

The fashion choice is part of a new partnership with clothing manufacturer Mizzen + Main, who officially announced their relationship with the 47-year-old hours before he teed off. As part of the arrangement, Mickelson is now an “equity holder” in the company that has also partnered with NFL superstar J.J. Watt.

While temperatures reached the upper 80s during afternoon play, Mickelson extolled the virtues of his unorthodox but eye-catching outfit.

“This stuff is stretchy. You don’t even know it’s on,” Mickelson said. “It’s very comfortable, so I actually really like it. I think nobody does kind of slightly overweight, middle-aged guy better than me, and this says exactly who I am.”

That comfort factor didn’t help Mickelson’s ball-striking down the stretch, as he played his final five holes in 7 over to shoot a 79. Mickelson’s opening score beat only two players in the 144-man field, and the 2007 champ now appears headed for his fifth missed cut in the last six years at this event.

Mickelson attributed his poor play to a lack of energy, but he certainly plans to give his newfound clothing partner a few more chances to shine at tournaments later this year.

“We have polo shirts and everything. I just like this (style),” Mickelson said. “It says that if you can play golf at the highest level, imagine how comfortable it is in the office and so forth. It’s very comfortable. I love it. I’ll wear it a lot when it’s cooler. I have some polos I’ll wear later on.”

Phil bogies #1 (10th hole)...now +8....pilot is stationed in the plane for a quick getaway when needed.

Well, at least I'll be freed up today not to try and watch anymore of Phil's bloodbath performance....hole#2 (par-5, 11th), Phil and Rickie both go for green in 2, both end up in tiny greenside pothole bunker....Rickie puts it to 1 ft, Phil puts it to 17 feet for birdie. Ugh, ain't happening today.

Phil got birdie on short par4, 3rd hole (12th).  Had to try and catch a glimpse, and yes, he's stubborn to a T....still wearing the same color/longsleeve shirt he had on yesterday (hopefully it's washed or a double :-) . Trying to "make a statement" I guess with the longsleeves....even if it kills his golf game, good golly, then claim fatigued and low energy, I wonder why?

Next hole 181 yrd Par-3, Phil hits a nice 181 yrd shot, 20 yards left of hole into the water....good golly, off by 20 yards... I can do that.

The good news is that PHIL got 6 birds today the bogies and double was the bad news

Evidently his new shirt endorsement also includes short sleeves and polo shirts. Why didn't he wear those? Attention getter. Said he was low on energy dealing with everything. Hope we don't have more surprises coming!

I followed Phil for the first 2 rounds. It was BRUTALLY hot both days. For whatever reason PHIL hasnt played well on this course. He planted the seed Sunday at Quail Hollow that he may not have energy. We don't know what he did on his 3 weeks off after Augusta but I did read he had course design business and coporate stuff.. He said he wasn't worried about 2 terrible rounds on a course he hasn't played well on for whatever reason, when he is having a great year.
IMO it's funny that he played 5 weeks in a row on west coast played 6 of 7 weeks with a victory and didn't play lousy because of fatigue. Maybe a cumulative effect. WHO KNOWS. I just think he knew before he started he wasn't going to play well this week. Be interesting because the US open will be his 3rd in a row. I thought despite the heat he looked fine and was walking briskly and getting out of bunkers like a 20 year old. THAT being said there may be a lot we don't know about his health
