I know they have different points schemes, but

Phil is #4 in Ryder Cup points yet

Phil is #35 in President's Cup ranking? What, is that right? I must have looked up the wrong year, lol?

I think Ryder cup only awards points for the majors the year before. The Pres cup is all the events this year and majors count more.

Ryder cup is based on majors in 2015 and the 2015-2016 PGA events. So PHIL is up there based on his Masters performance.

President's Cup is roughly money for some 2014 events and all from 2015. PHIL needs some big golf in 2015 to qualify for President's cup.

PHil is statistical Nowhere land as he is 36th in the President's cup points. Frankly he needs a win or two to qualify on points.

Yet he is also the 22nd ranked golfer in the world based on OWGR points. He is the 13th on the list of Americans. He is behind people like Billy Horschel, Chris Kirk and JB Holmes who do not have the Presidential Cup record that he .

Of course Keegan Bradley is only list as 28th in the Presidential cup lists. Of course without PHIL or Tiger why watch the Presidents cup?

I think PHIL needs to show some additional form between now and time selection time. I might his top 20 in Scotland was only matched or bettered by two americans who are certain to be on the time--Speith and Johnson

But he's not playing much. What, he's playing the tournament before the PGA Championship?, so off for 2 weeks? He loses whatever competitiveness he gains, so back to square one.

I realize when a mic is put in front of you after every round you gotta say something but we are down to the last major and Im sure Phil does feel CLOSE but we are running out of time if all he really cares about is majors. Fed ex cup after Barclays, his sponsor...who knows . If he wants points for Pres Cup he better play. Jay Haas was quoted as saying HE COULDNT IMAGINE A TEAM WITHOUT PHIL.

PHIL was close at the Masters--here is where PHIL faltered in 2015

Honda T17--should have been top 5 weak Sunday round
Houston T17- weak saturday round
Masters T2--Speith plus weak 1st round
Wells Fargo T4--weak saturday round
Memphis T3--weak saturday round

Open championship it was the missed putts and bunker play on Friday plus the round hole. Still PHIL was near the top of American play. I can't explain but PHIL has faltered during one round in six events this year. The events are 72 holes and that's what has got him. Still in big events he comes up big--2014 and 2015. I would pick him.

But therein lies the problem, imo.  I don't think you can play for Majors-Only, you have to play yourself into 'playability'.  I don't think disappearing for weeks and then playing a tournament before the Major and then the Major is a way to get that 'groove in'. He may come close on sheer ability, but the inconsistency where he drops one round out of 4 is enough to keep him out of most tournaments.  I think he is simply playing for the sponsorship money....what, he made $50+ million last year but only $2.16 mill (~4 %) from PGA winnings. He is protecting the $48+ mill (96% of his revenues) that comes out of sponsorships by this talk of 'I am this close' (and then doesn't make the cut, ugh).

OK, current standings....wow, Phil only went up 3 spots for his showing in the PGA:

RANK THIS WEEK,  RANK LAST WEEK,  PLAYER NAME,   POINTS:
* Captain's Picks will be announced in September 2015
Do you think the Captain's will jump over 22 people to pick Phil? In his press conference at the PGA, when asked, Phil said "he wants to play his way on like he has for 20 years, not be a Captain's Pick". So does that mean he won't go if he doesn't make it on his own and ends up being 'picked'?

1 1 Jordan Spieth   10,555
2 2 Bubba Watson   7,485

I THINK he won't go if he doesn't make it on points because if he played poorly as a pick there would be too much blow back. Plus his pride and ego are at stake. He made every team on points so regardless of how you played you EARNED a spot. Whereas he'd be picked because he is Phil and such an asset in the team room. They could ask him to be an assistant captain but don't know if he'd do it?

Computer glitch messed up rankings; required a re-calculation of points/standings: Phil gains 4 spots.

My take on PHIL is this. Look at OWGR.

PHIL is #23 in the World. On the big stage events he scores high. Yes Kevin Kisner has more President Cup points but he scores big at minor events. PHIL is the 12th ranked American in OWGR

PHIL has soars in big events. Look at 2015- During the majors and World Golf Championships PHIL has clearly been among the top 12 US golfers.

When the stage is big PHIL is there--at least among the top 12.

Read 2 different articles one said Phil would make the PRES cup team with a win this week the other said he wouldnt. A win is a big ask with the way things have been going but geez if he wins and still doesn't qualify on points it be a real bummer the record came to an end.

They said on G.C. that a win wouldn't put him into automatic territory. It might put him closer to the automatic entry level such that taking him as a Captain's Pick wouldn't look so strange. Then you have Jay Haas maybe taking his son, Bill Haas, so that might just leave 1 pick.... I don't think Phil makes it, they may have a sentiment that 'lets go with a younger team'.

What a shame that WHEN YOU CRUNCH NUMBERS EVEN A WIN THIS WEEK WONT QUALIFY HIM ON POINTS. Phil said he didn't want to be a pick and now that he cant make it on points you gotta wonder where his head is at. A win would salvage his season but at this point you have to wonder if he is even motivated. Fed ex 10 million doesn't change his life like others who are hungry for it. Just read he is going to Canada next week to look at his golf course. What a lousy 2 years career wise. Part of me hopes he can pull off a Billy Horshall end of year surprise but he really has to WANT IT.

Well, part of me wants Phil in the Presidents' Cup because....it's Phil. The other part of me says "he hasn't fixed what has been wrong with his game in the longest time, and he doesn't deserve to be in there....others have been playing better". So I'll just go with what comes without hoping for one thing or the other. It kills me that short hitters who keep it in the fairway have been doing so well.....why doesn't Phil fix his driving....it's the same doonboggle that has doomed Tiger lately. Back 'in the day' when Phil and Tiger were among the longest, they faired pretty well, but now others are hitting longer and straighter and what was previously their advantage is now their detriment (if they get wild off the tee) because the golf courses have gotten tougher (longer rough, tighter fairways) as well. When you have short hitters like Spencer Levin (277) doing well last week....geesh, Phil (300 yrds), wake up, but those short hitter have better driving percentages.

Current Ryder Cup Standings:

I'm thinking if Phil plays well this year he could possibly play himself onto the Automatic-8 of the Ryder Cup team, or even if he is outside, if he's at least in the vicinity...8-15, he could well get picked at a Captain's pick, especially if they got 4 choices...give 1 to the older 'good' player and get 3 youngins with the rest :-).
