Phil at Zozo Championship 2020 (Sherwood Country Club)
Ugh, is Phil following in Bryson's footsteps (i.e., 48-inch driver for Bryson) by using a 47.5-inch driver?
Callaway
Phil Mickelson: After his (two drivers in the bag) win on the PGA Tour Champions, Lefty went full gearhead and continued to test not only the new Apex MB ’21 irons (6-PW) but also put a 47.5-inch Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero in the bag. The (low-lofted) 9-degree head, set now at 8 degrees (swing weight at D7) will be equipped with either a Project X HZURDUS Smoke Green 60 6.5 or a KBS TD 60G C5 TX.
In addition, Phil is bringing back the 2-wood having put a 43.5-inch, 12.5-degree “old school” X Hot 3 Deep. The idea with both is distance gain (non-shocker) for example on Tour there are a number of bunkers, forced carries at the 300+ clip and to be able to fly by those on command is a huge advantage. Dispersion will suffer a bit in this scenario, but that’s what the 2-wood is for. The new driver set up gave Phil additional ball speed and on avg a 310 carry. The 2 wood is to fill the larger gap created by the driver—this new fairway metal gives Phil about 280-285 carry.
Longer Shaft = less control/greater dispersion !!!! He's going to be hitting it all over the planet.
Oh yea, +1 and T-66. That's working nicely.

I didn't get to see any.... was he really using a 47.5-inch driver shaft? That's insane.

He is, but seems he mainly used that 2 wood. He's basically back to the 2 drivers setup he won at Augusta with in 2006

3 OB balls. 9 on a par 5.the champions tour has given him.a false sense of security on the pgatour. Cant he just be happy with a 309 yrd. Drive an practice long irons. His male ego is killing his shot at contention on the pgatour.

He no longer can 'hang with the guys' on the PGA Tour. No longer relevant....just play the Champions Tour Phil or some placed on PGA Tour that has little rough and trees and is wide open.

Let's hope he stops the roller coaster play in time for Augusta.

Yes, Phil playing much better today (but was in the gulley in one hole)... so what's the difference today? Unfamiliarity with the course, or rather, getting familiar with it? (he never played Tiger's tournament when he had it here, did he?
I take that back....finished sloppy again. Gave back 3 shots.

Tiger and Phil combine for an 80 on their opening 9 paired together. Phil played those holes 11 shots better yesterday as well going from -6 to +5

Been watching them online and it's been tough to watch. Heard Phil say about 4th hole where's my head today.
Years ago he said nothing worse than playing on Sunday out of contention. Thought maybe Tiger would help elevate but not in this scenario I think 3 rounds spoiled him on champions tour...plus a cart.

Should go back and play Champions Tour. He's competitive maybe 1 round out of 4? maybe 2 rounds on an easy course with few trees and little rough.

Phil has had a chance to come within 1 shot of tiger and missed 5ft putts. I guess I care more about that mini victory than Phil. Lol !!
