3. Phil's major form defies explanation

Over the past 21 months, Mickelson has looked disinterested and lethargic. He has been even more crooked than usual off the tee. His iron game has been surprisingly erratic. And his putting, especially inside 10 feet, has been dreadful.

So of course he shot 14 under at the Masters – a score that would have won all but five Masters outright – and tied for second with Justin Rose. Since his surprising 2013 Open triumph, Lefty has only three top-10s in his last 35 PGA Tour events – and two of those have come at the majors, the 2014 PGA (T-2) and this year’s Masters.

Now 44, Phil has basically become the casual sports fan – only interested in the majors. And he's going to keep contending in 'em, too.

Period end of story. Yes he missed a lot of putts because he hit a ton of greens but he made some putts this last week. Lots of par putts.

I should note PHIL has told folks he is playing Memorial and Memphis before US open.

I am guessing we will see him in two weeks at Match play then TPC and maybe Wells Fargo

He said he was playing March Play and the Players. Didn't mention Wells Fargo. With its new spot on the calendar and Phil saying he wants to prepare for the 5 big events I have a feeling he won't play it. As he said he isn't motivated to try and grind our wins week after week. The Majors and Players and WGCs are the main events that will elevate his stature in golf.
I just watched the 2nd round you posted Ralph THNX. Hope he can keep that putter going the rest of the year. He made some nice par saves.

He might not play in North Carolina but I do note that it is the site of the PGA in 2017.

That's a plus on its side. I think the Texas two step in Dallas and Fort Worth is certainly kaput for the year.

I note one little thing. PHIL was -15 on par fives this year. He actually was only -3 at #13 this year. Usually that is his best hole.

Well I was pleasantly wrong Phil is playing Wells Fargo. He has done well on that track.

I am a bit surprised but three in a row it is!!!

Quail Hollow actually really suits PHIL's game.
