This would be an excellent time to make up a little ground, as there were quite a few above him in the standings who missed the cut. It looks like those out early are struggling thus far, so I'm not sure if it's pin placement, weather, or what. They said on tv that this is a difficult course.

Phil is as good as anyone here except for putting. All the extra time he put in hasn't made any difference.
I agree there is an opportunity here with those guys MC .I wish they would stop putting new courses in the rotation. I guess it really doesn't matter at his age now.

Is there any sport where a 47 yr old can consistently be competitive against guys half his age? As far as the Pres Cup goes everything I've read says the guys ahead of Phil aren't that great and have no experience on team competition. We'll see what next week does for Phil. He's won and shot some low scores on that course before .

Phil +5 today, +6 overall (not a single birdie today). Only considerate thing is to withdraw from contention in Presidents Cup. It would be a magnanimous gesture considering he has not been playing well and would speak well for Phil wanting what is best for the team.

He has another week to show some signs of life. But question remains...2 years ago he was 30th and a captains pick and along with Zach was 3 - 0 -1 the two top point earners on the team. There is already plenty of young guys on the team who haven't ever been part of this event. There is something to be said for all Phil can bring to the team. Everyone says that. Plus Phil has been known to rise for the occasion. I also read the guys ahead of Phil on points haven't exactly lit it up lately. A few of them MC this week.

Phil would have likely been as well off points wise if he'd missed the cut. Not sure what to think, but next week might tell the tale.

They way i look at it, he got a Captain's pick last year and hasn't been performing, consider last year his 'swan song'. Give it up to someone younger and able to play in more President's cups and get that sense of 'doing it for the team'. Now, play the 'last Ryder cup swan song card again for the Ryder cup if he doesn't get it on points (and not likely to get it on points, imo). The farewell sentiment will be far more foregiving and in his favor if he does this. But take an untitled Presidents cup gimmie and then do poorly, and gawd forbid they lose, then the offer to get a Ryder cup Captain's pick is far less likely.

PHIL deserves a pick-he has devoted a lot of time to team events over the last +20 years.

HOF-five majors-team guy---IMO while not quite entitled to a captain's pick as one the major faces of American golf for 20 years he gets the call.

Of course without PHIL the viewership will drop as well overall sports interest. On the flip side if the USA loses without PHIL that would be on the Captain?
