PGA championship 2017 2nd round

Post by Admin on Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:58 am

PHIL's worse round ever in the PGA was Thursday--a 79.

He needs a super round this morning to make the cut

A big maybe but if Phil can get to +5 he has a long shot chance of making cut. But missing a birdie on par 5 first hole doesn't help.

Phil bogies the 2nd hole (11th)... now +9. Not looking good.

Weird, following Phil on PGATour shottracker, has him just finishing 11th (2nd hole). Watching Rory/Rickie on live video feed, just had them finish on the 11th (2nd hole)? Is there a time delay somewhere?

I wish Phil attended to his errant driving years ago.  Courses were only going to get longer, fairways tighter, and rough deeper as he got older.  An errant drive would cost you more at 35 years old than at 25 yrs old, and much more at 45 than at either 25 or 35, especially in majors (which is what he says he has been mostly playing for).  So to not fix that aspect of his game, he's made the game that much harder as he's grown older.  That makes proximity to the hole that much more important.  Putting difficulty of greens has generally stayed the same over these same years, perhaps for tournaments that speed up the greens like US Open.

Perhaps Phil's first birdie of the tournament comes on his 21st hole?

WOW.... missed a 4 foot putt. Sums up the tournament for Phil.

Phil misses 4 fter. He made up his mind yesterday he can't win so he's going to make sure he misses the cut. He has said nothing worse than playing in a major on sunday with no shot. Imagine how he feels today. He made a lot of news shooting 79.

can't buy a putt as he misses birds from 12 and 5 feet on 1st two holes. Putting ain't easy this week but frustrating. Plus the 7 foot par putt.

+2 today, +10 total. Kisner is in a zone (-2 today, -6 total).

Ugh... missed a 7 footer for par. +3 today, +11 total. Not a single birdie in this tournament...yet. This performance will resonate with the President's Cup choices. Maybe Phil could be an assistant captain?

Unless a miracle happens at the first 2 playoff tournaments I see Phil telling Stricker don't pick me. He probably will be a assistant. .Steve is a buddy and doesn't need the stress of thinking he has to pick phil.

I think that would be the fair thing to do.  It really would look awkward if Phil were to be given a pick considering his play leading into the Cup, unless like you said, he were to win one of the two FedEx cup tournaments.... I don't think he'll gain enough points unless he does something miraculous to make it to the final.  Well, he made 1 birdie so far in the PGA.

I can't believe that Paula Creamer got picked (secret pick?... what's that?) for the Solheim cup... she was like #20th in rankings. My wife, an ardent Paula fan, would argue "well, no one shows the enthusiasm and excitement she does" and I would respond with "...but you want to pick people who played better to get into better rankings...the idea is to win the cup, not to have the best cheer leaders" silent Smile

I heard Paula wasn't picked originally and was upset. Someone who was picked withdrew with injury then P aula got the nod.

Yes, Jessica Korda withdrew from nagging elbow injury. But there were 8 other players between automatic picks and Paula.

Jimmy Walker says he needs a real caddie. No conversation with anyone during the round including his brother. He said he plays much faster and it's all on him. Not sure what the answer is, but it surely isn't working for Phil. I still think there's more going on, but maybe the fact that there's too much going on is the problem. Than, and the fact that he's an aging arthritic. Now I don't know which of the younger guys I'd most like to see have a great career. I am not a big Jordan S. fan, so I'm counting him out. DJ is a bit of a mess, so he's not it either. Maybe Rickie, but not sure.

I think this whole thing with Bones is that Phil isn't going to put in hours of practice in anymore, he's got so much going on and he's older, and just like Fred Couples cutting Joe Lacava loose ("you can earn more with someone else"), he is giving Bones the same opportunity, especially when a caddy knows he isn't "doing all that he can" (i.e., practice like he's hungry)...or possibly Bones knowing/seeing this, decides on a different course for remainder of his career to make something of what's left for him (after all, Phil will continue to make millions on his remaining endorsements; Bones may not make much on Phil's winnings). At least with his brother on the bag, he can get away with telling him "we can spend some time together and have fun", though will not likely help Phil win as Bones could ( didn't Bones act like his personal shrink at times?).

Some comments after a CBS article on "Phil missing PGA Championship Cut for 1st time in 22 Years!" One comment in particular had something I was thinking as well in my post, about Bones knowing when the boss is putting in the time or not....and whether he saw this.

Good job by Kyle and whoever else predicted this.

bring back bones

He's had a great career, but at 47, Phil doesn't appear able to compete with the younger guys on a regular basis. I still enjoy watching him but this week was painful.

jdbroccoman  • 12 hours ago
Phil didnt have Slugger around to help him out

Goodforall  • a day ago
Phil is past done! He may still have the talent to compete but not the desire or the work ethic. I'm thinking Bones saw this and had enough. Good for him. Find a young golfer who actually wants to put the effort in. All Phil is doing is embarrassing himself.

zombiesonic  • 2 days ago
You can only scramble so much on a tough course. I think Phil can still compete maybe not win but he needs to work on his driving accuracy.

Bobby5145  • 2 days ago
It is a shame..We all want Phil to be in contention..Phil and Tiger connect us to the previous generation...it's great though to watch the new generation play some GREAT golf...Especially Jordan Speith who not only I s awesome, but he also is very knowledgeable of the history of the game..Go Jordan!!!

I don't think its a lack of practice issue. Phil wouldn't have spent millions on a big facility in his backyard if he wasn't planning on being competitive till he was 50 yrs. old. Phil was always in Tigers shadow for the bulk of his prime and thus never won those big yearly titles. Now he has a chance with Pres Cup and Ryder cup to really make history with being on the teams this many years. The Bones issue is probably a combination of things, Bones bad knees and IMO this past year Bones has really been in Phils face..literally inches away telling him all kinds of stuff before he executes a shot. I thought that didn't help Phils focus. That being said Bones is gone and we still have the focus reason for poor play.I think it was Bones wanting out and I think its pretty Bad doing so in the middle of a season. Pretty amazing and strange  that the network gives Bones a job and AIRTIME so quickly after the split.I read Bones is doing the playoffs and they gave him the British open. Someone got cutout  last minute.  Phil took a shot on his brother thinking he would be able to contend without a real caddie for the remainder and it is too much for him to think about. Jimmy Walker even said so. Its too bad because Phil really wants to contend and win again. Being 47 and winless for 4 years and having come 2nd 3 times in a major the last 3 years can really do a number on your head..they always said golf is a game between your ears and to add to that Ive never seen so many young guys play so great. For Phil fans it really stinks!! I hope he can get it together. Im going to the Northern Trust open for the pro am and first 2 rounds I hope hes not still struggling. It will be a new venue for everyone.

Not sure if his backyard facility includes full driving range...that's where his game has hurt him the most. Short game facility, yea great, maybe that's why he's had a good short game, easy to make those facilities in a backyard, but he has been lacking in driving ability for.... for almost.... forever. I'll say he can't contend in majors 'anymore' when he has such horrible driving statistics...everyone who drove it bad, or approached shots were bad, suffered at PGA Champ unless they got a lucky break. Stricker should reach out to Phil early about being a Captain's Assistant and get that out of the way.
