Ryder Cup: Mickelson vs Finchem

Post by bulls9999 on Tue Mar 10, 2015 5:42 pm

Well, I'll have to side with Finchem on this one.

Seems like Phil doesn't like that Ryder Cup points can be acquired for wrap-around season events (Oct-Dec) reasoning that not many top tier players play during that session, and they are the ones impacted by the Ryder Cup points...so Phil saying they should be given out starting only in January.  The contrary argument is that, if that is true Phil, then those Ryder Cup points gained by lower ranking individuals during that time will not benefit them anyway towards gaining a berth in the Ryder Cup team, and Majors are worth double, so the higher-tier players will benefit from that.

I disagree with Phil, whose argument seems like he wants to protect his chances of gaining a Ryder Cup berth.  I would argue, that if a 'higher-tier' player wants to play the off-season wrap around events, then they should have the benefit of acquiring Ryder Cup points (and to attract higher-tier players you need to offer the same benefits as the post-January season).  Now someone will say, but but but Phil likes to take family time off.  Too bad, you snooze, you lose.  Yes, golf is somewhat becoming a Triathlon of sorts where you can make your points to keep your card or gain entry into WGC events (world ranking points) by playing more events. I think Padraiq played 35 tournaments last year....I think I read it was him....that is crazy (and I know I read he will be playing 9 out of 10 consecutive tournaments and was glad he didn't make the WGC otherwise it would have been 10-out-of-10).

Wow, didn't think Phil fell that far down. A 2015 that is like his 2014 and he will be out of the top 40 by the time the Ryder Cup comes around.

Phil's point is not just his alone. Last year, Jimmy Walker won 3 times in the off season, and then cooled off. It's a long ways away, if guys get hot that year, and do not play well after that, but make the team. I don't think it has to do with Phil, as I've heard it discussed lots on TGC. I mean--I don't think his comments are necessarily self-serving. I think he's trying to figure out how to get the US in a winning position with the hottest players without adding a continent to do so. JMO

PHIL is the best guy to handle the press in these situations. It was a group decision yet all the headlines make it sound like it was Phils solo decision.

Glad to have him back in the mix, but I must admit to enjoying the playoff last week. Loved it that Spieth won, but O'Hair would have been a good story as well. Glad he's back to playing well.
