and Yes PHIL has got more then his share of press attention this week. Not more then anymore but a lot. Big weeks for PHIL. Should be rain this afternoon. Of course PHIL has shined in rain affected events like the US open 1999-2002-2009-2013 as well as Masters 2006-2010 & PGA 2005. So let's go PHIL.

Hope your correct about the rain and Phil rising to the occasion. Just turned on TV and "talking experts" are saying morning /afternoon could have a big advantage.

Looks like a big arc of storms headed towards Pittsburgh....nice thing is that once they go through, it will be clear.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/pittsburgh-pa/weather-radar-r1h

From the looks on the animated, it looks like it will get there before Phil gets to play, imo.

Wow, in the 1-hr since I posted that, the weather front got much closer to Pittsburgh, I suspect the weather will hit well before Phil starts (and be gone as well).  Hopefully it softens up the greens for him :-) but may make it more difficult out of the salad patches.

OK, 11:10am Pittsburgh time....Phil goes off at 2:10, so 3 hours and looks like the rain/storm system is almost past Pittsburgh, so I'm thinking it will be clear for Phil?...oops...I see they just suspended Round 1 due to weather.

This is shades of Medinah 1990

USGA came in a made the course easy. Course then got rocked by rain. Record low scores resulted. Scoring excellent this morning. With all this rain, I'd expect 10 under or lower to win this week. Oakmont is not that long of a course so players can hit irons to avoid the rough.

Now, they may not finish until Monday as new storms keep popping up behind the ones that move through

Last thing I want to see is Phil standing on his first tee with the lead being -8 or better. I just think he will be forcing things when that happens. With his 25 yrs. experience he should know better but I have my doubts.

Thanks to Derek for the historical reminder. I noted above that PHIL has often done well with softened greens and weather delays. I would love to see PHIL get at least 10 holes in today. Maybe all 18 as they can play very late in PA this time of year.

US Open 2016 1st round Empty Re: US Open 2016 1st round

That's all folks it is time to head home in PA. Here is the good news bad news for this for PHIL

1st the bad. Every one has completed at least 8 holes. So PHIL will tee off at about 8:30 AM on Friday. He is in the 46th pairing so everyone on the course has to finish but the next wave should be teeing off on the 1st and 10th holes. So PHIL plays 18 holes and get done by 1:30.  My best guess is that PHIL will get off in his second round about 2 and 1/2 hours later at 4PM. Could be slower then that. That looks like 13 to 14 holes for the second round. That's maybe 30 holes in one day. That's a ton. Could wear on PHIL

The Good. PHIL will have time to warm up on Friday-some time to rest. It is likely that the best conditions for the week will be Friday.  Tommorrow is the day to make hay!!! So if PHIL can handle the holes he can get some good conditions under his belt. For that most part PHIL will also straight through his rounds. That can be a plus if you hot but you are have gaps for practice

I like that Phil gets to play in the morning with soft conditions. I also like that he gets to play more than 9 holes in the second round tomorrow. Should be a harder course on Saturday and Sunday.

This won't be that much harder than a tour course tomorrow unless we have some real wind.

I mean we have low rough and soft, tour speed greens. I'd be hitting driver on every single hole.

Now, you may be thinking well Merion was soft and over par won. Well... Merion played a LOT longer than does Oakmont. Oakmont does not have the monster holes such as 3, 5, 6, 14, 17, and 18 that Merion does. The mammoth 12, unless the wind is into them, is still reachable. That;s why only the longest of the bombers contended there, and even they had to hit long irons into par 4s. Not the case here

he should finish his first round around 2:45. Probably will start round 2 around 4. He may have a hole or 2 to finish Saturday morning

Did anyone not watch todays' limited action....green speeds were playing havoc and anything in the rough didn't go anywhere. It is not like a typical tour venue.

They have a very ambitious schedule for Friday with a 7:30 start time. PHIL will be off at 9:39 but I wonder about the 5 hour round time with the guys going out in threes plus they will be changing tees and pin locations.

USGA wants a 1:45 2nd round start time with PHIL off at 3:24. That would have the last group out at 3:57 for the 1st wave of 2nd round guys. You can play til 8:30 or so.

I guess we will see. The USGA took a lot of heat for not letting guys practice.

they were backing the balls up yesterday on 12, which runs away from the players

This setup reminds me of Quail Hollow from about 10 years ago
