PHIL matchup

Post by Admin on Tue Mar 22, 2016 9:02 am

and PHIL will back this week. New format where the guys play in a group of 4 and then one from that group advances to Weekend play

PHIL-Patrick Reed-Daniel Berger-Matthew Fitzpatrick are in group 9---The draw is simple. The top 64 players are played in groups of 16. The top sixteen guys in OWGR are in groups 1-16. Then one player out of 17-32 group-33 to 48 and 49-64 are drawn and placed in a group. I like PHIL's group and I think he can advance. You have to win at least twice to advance and there maybe playoffs. Win three times and you automatically advance.

Should be fun!!!

Yea, had to look it up myself...forgot the format.... OK, I got it now....4 players, so each player will play the other 3 players (i.e., 3 rounds) and the player with the best record from each group goes on to the 'Sweet 16 Match Play' :-).   Yes, much better than the 1-and-done method of 64 individuals entering match play.

The 64-player Dell Match Play field will be divided into 16 four-player groups. Each group will play round-robin matches within their group on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (March 23, 24 and 25). The player with the best record in each of the four player groups advances to the Round of 16 for single-elimination match play (in the event of a two-way tie in a group, head-to-head match results will be used as the tiebreaker; a three-way tie will require a sudden-death stroke play hole by hole playoff).

Well Phil, who's fault is that? You had several weeks off....you could have gotten here early and played a few rounds. Your choice, stop with the excuses.

Mickelson 'a little bit behind' in prep at Austin CC

AUSTIN, Texas – The Wednesday start and new venue for the WGC-Dell Match Play means every player not named Jordan Spieth will be learning as they go this week.

Not surprisingly, Phil Mickelson said Tuesday that he feels “a little bit behind” with only one practice round at Austin Country Club.

“I feel like the nuances of the course are not sharp in my mind,” he said. “It’s hard to get a really clear picture of the shot you want to hit when you don’t know what it’s like around the greens and how the ball is going to react. So I’m a little bit behind.”

Mickelson said that he tried to “cram in a quick round” Tuesday, but will study the course as he plays his three matches in pool play.

“Nobody is going to be really sharp on the golf course,” he said. “I don’t feel as prepared as I like heading into a tournament. But my game feels sharp. It’s the course knowledge that isn’t quite sharp.”

Mickelson hasn’t played since he finished fifth at Doral. It was his fourth top-11 finish in six starts this year.

Lefty says he hasn’t yet visited Augusta National in advance of this year’s Masters, but he plans to head there this weekend if he doesn’t make the knockout stage, or early next week before the Shell Houston Open.

PHIL said in interview he feels behind because he doesn't know the course. Said crammed in holes today but will have to learn it as he's playing and you have to pace yourself. IMO Phil likes having the Masters be his 3rd event but this is a grind on the weekend if you get that far. I think he'd prefer a regular stroke play event being part of his run up.
